Switzerland was my mother’s dream destination, and we were all excited to finally be there. We traveled to Zurich using FlixBus, the same service Akshit and I had used for our trip to Amsterdam. The overnight journey was comfortable and took about 9-10 hours. One of the best features of FlixBus is the onboard toilet, which made the trip a lot more comfortable for my Nani, as she needed it during the long ride.
So let's start with Exploring Zurich and Jungfraujoch. We arrived in Zurich around 9 AM, and then headed towards our Airbnb in Wollishofen. The best way to get around Zurich is by tram, so we took the tram to reach our accommodation. I highly recommend Airbnb for family trips to Europe—it’s the perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and a local experience.
Our first day in Zurich was dedicated to exploring the city. We did some shopping and visited a few local restaurants. For lunch, we headed to Hiltl Restaurant, the world’s oldest continuously open vegetarian restaurant. The unique concept here was a buffet with a pay-by-weight system, which was both fun and practical. The food was absolutely delicious, and we loved the variety of options.
Later, we visited Läderach, a renowned chocolate shop. Switzerland is famous for its white chocolate, although you can find all kinds of chocolates there. White chocolate is definitely the specialty here, while Belgium is better known for its rich dark chocolate.
For our second day in Switzerland, we booked a package tour to the top of Europe, Jungfraujoch, which is home to Europe’s highest train station. The tour package included everything—transport from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen, then by cogwheel train to Kleine Scheidegg, and finally, up to Jungfraujoch. The only thing not included was food, which was on us.
Our journey began around 8 AM, and we reached Interlaken by 10:30-11:00 AM. We had a one-hour stop, which was perfect for grabbing a bite or snapping some pictures. While we were there, I noticed a Hooters restaurant, and, despite being with my family, I couldn’t resist checking it out—though I’ll admit, it felt a bit awkward! xD
From Interlaken, our bus took us to Grindelwald, where we boarded the train to Kleine Scheidegg station. I have to say, the journey from Zurich to Grindelwald was the most beautiful one of my life. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking—surreal views of the mountains, valleys, and Swiss countryside made the journey feel like a dream. Once we reached Kleine Scheidegg, we finally boarded the train that would take us to our destination: the highest point in Europe, Jungfraujoch.
After passing through the stunning Bernese Alps and a series of tunnels, we finally reached the highest point in Europe – Jungfraujoch. The train journey was like a dream come true, winding through the mountains at such an impressive altitude. I never imagined that trains could travel at such heights and still run smoothly.
Upon arrival, we entered the Top of Europe building, which houses several attractions, including panoramic restaurants, shops, a post office (one of the highest in Europe), and the Sphinx Observatory. The observatory is open to the public and offers an outdoor viewing area with 360-degree views of snow-covered mountains all around. The scenery was so breathtaking that no photo could truly capture the beauty of it.
